Watch Water Resistance, Explained
The number stamped on your caseback is a static pressure test conducted once, on a new watch, in a laboratory. It is not a depth you can go to. Here is what each rating actually permits, why the standards work the way they do, and the two things that ruin water resistance on watches that had plenty.
Almost everyone misreads the number on their watch, and the misreading runs in both directions. People assume a 30-metre watch can go swimming because thirty metres sounds deep, and they assume a 300-metre watch is invulnerable because three hundred metres sounds absurd. Both assumptions have ruined watches.
The figure is not a depth rating in the way a diving computer's is. It is the result of a laboratory pressure test conducted on newly manufactured samples, expressed in the equivalent depth of water — and the international standard that defines it says so explicitly. This piece explains what the standards actually specify, what each rating permits in practice, and the two things that quietly remove water resistance from watches that had plenty of it when they left the factory.
The number is not a depth
The governing standard states the position plainly: an indication of the test pressure in terms of water depth does not mean a water-resistant watch was designed for repeated long-term use in such water depths. The test is static — the watch is held at a fixed pressure, in still water, at a controlled temperature, once, when new.
Real water is not static. Three things a laboratory test does not simulate:
- Dynamic pressure. Moving through water multiplies the pressure on a surface. A hand swinging through a freestyle stroke, or a watch hitting the surface in a dive, generates far more instantaneous pressure than its depth implies.
- Temperature. Gaskets are rubber. Hot water, a shower, a sauna or direct sun expands them and then contracts them, and a gasket that has cycled through that repeatedly seals less well than one that has not.
- Age. The test was performed when the watch was new. Every year since, the gaskets have been hardening.
This is why the sensible reading of a water-resistance figure is as a margin of safety rather than a permission. A 300-metre watch is not for going to 300 metres; it is for making sure that everything you actually do — swimming, showering, being rained on for a decade — sits so far inside the tested envelope that nothing surprises you.
The two standards that matter
There are two, and the difference between them is the single most useful thing in this article.
ISO 22810(which superseded ISO 2281) covers ordinary water-resistant watches — the vast majority of everything sold. It specifies a single static pressure test on newly manufactured samples. A watch that passes may be marked "Water Resistant" with its test pressure.
ISO 6425 covers diver'swatches, and it is a substantially harder standard. It applies only to watches rated to a minimum of 100 m, and it requires testing at 125% of the rated pressure— so a watch marked as a 200-metre diver's watch must withstand the equivalent of 250 metres of static water while continuing to function correctly. It also adds requirements around legibility in darkness, resistance to magnetism and shock, a unidirectional bezel or equivalent elapsed-time indication, and — critically — testing of every watch rather than of samples.
What each rating actually permits
The following is the conventional reading of the ratings, and it is more conservative than most owners expect. It is worth being conservative: the failure mode is not a scratch, it is a written-off movement.

Two consequences worth internalising. First, 30 m is not a swimming rating — this catches out an enormous number of dress-watch owners every summer, and it is why our best dress watches guide flags water resistance in every entry. Second, 100 m is enough for almost everybody: a 100-metre watch will swim, snorkel and shower for years without complaint. The step up to 200 or 300 metres buys margin for age and for diving specifically, not everyday capability.
What makes a real diver's watch
Beyond the pressure test, ISO 6425 requires features that exist for specific safety reasons, and understanding them tells you a lot about why dive watches look the way they do.
- A unidirectional rotating bezel. It turns counter-clockwise only, so if it is knocked during a dive it can only ever overstate your elapsed time — telling you that you have been down longer than you have, which is the safe direction to be wrong in. - Legibility in total darknessat 25 cm, including a clear indication that the watch is still running — which is why dive watches have a luminous seconds hand or marker.
- A screw-down crown in practice, and resistance to shock, magnetism, thermal shock and salt water.
- Every watch tested, not a sample from the production run.

What actually kills water resistance
Almost no watch fails because someone went too deep. They fail for two mundane reasons, both entirely preventable.
The crown was not screwed down. This is the overwhelming cause of water damage in luxury watches. A screw-down crown left unscrewed — after setting the time, after winding, after a date change — leaves an open channel straight into the movement. Get in the habit of checking the crown every single time before the watch goes near water, and treat the check as automatic rather than occasional.
Gaskets aged out. Case, crown, caseback and crystal gaskets are rubber, and rubber hardens. A ten-year-old watch that has never been serviced has ten-year-old gaskets, and its actual water resistance bears no relationship to the number on the caseback. Two more, less common but worth naming. Chronograph pushers are the weakest seal on any case; pressing one underwater is a reliable way to flood a watch that was otherwise fine, which is covered in our chronograph guide. And any time the caseback has been off — a battery change, a strap-pin repair, a curious owner — the water resistance is gone until the watch has been resealed and pressure-tested. Practical rules
- Screw the crown down. Every time. If you learn one thing here, this is it.
- Never operate pushers or unscrew a crown underwater, on any watch, at any rating.
- Keep mechanical watches out of hot showers, saunas and hot tubs. Heat is harder on gaskets than depth is, and the temperature swing is what does the damage. Soap and shampoo also degrade rubber seals.
- Rinse with fresh water after the sea. Salt crystallises in the gaps around the crown, the bezel and the bracelet, and salt crystals are abrasive.
- Treat a leather strap as the limiting factor. Your 300-metre diver will be fine; the leather will not. Fit a rubber strap before the watch goes near water.
- If condensation appears under the crystal, stop. Take the watch to a watchmaker immediately, crown down. Moisture inside a movement causes corrosion measured in days, not months.
Getting it tested — and when
Water resistance can be checked without opening the watch. A watchmaker uses a dry test — the case is pressurised and monitored for deformation — or a wet test, in which the watch is submerged in a pressure chamber and watched for escaping bubbles. It is quick, inexpensive relative to what it protects, and most service centres and many independent watchmakers offer it.
Have it done annually if you swim with the watch, after any battery change or caseback removal, and before a trip where the watch will be in the sea. If you have just bought a pre-owned watch, have it tested before you trust the caseback number — you have no idea how old those gaskets are, and a seller's assurance is not a pressure test. Frequently asked questions
Can I swim with a 30m water resistant watch?
No. A 30 m / 3 bar rating covers everyday wear, splashes and rain only — not showering, swimming or diving. The figure is the result of a static laboratory pressure test on a new watch, not a depth you can go to, and moving through water generates far more instantaneous pressure than the depth alone suggests. For swimming you want at least 50 m, and realistically 100 m for peace of mind.
What does 100m water resistance actually mean?
It means the watch passed a static pressure test equivalent to 100 metres of water when new. In practice it is suitable for recreational water sports and snorkelling but not scuba diving. For almost every owner, 100 m is genuinely enough — it will swim and shower for years — and the step up to 200 or 300 m buys margin for ageing gaskets and for actual diving rather than everyday capability.
What is the difference between 'water resistant' and a 'diver's watch'?
A watch marked 'Water Resistant 200M' has passed ISO 22810, a single static pressure test on production samples. A watch marked "DIVER'S WATCH 200M" has passed ISO 6425, which requires testing at 125% of the rated pressure — so 250 metres for a 200-metre watch — plus requirements for legibility in darkness, magnetic and shock resistance, a unidirectional elapsed-time bezel, and testing of every individual watch rather than samples.
Why is a dive watch bezel unidirectional?
So that a knock can only ever make you think you have been underwater longer than you actually have. The bezel turns counter-clockwise only, which means any accidental rotation moves the elapsed-time reading in the conservative direction. A bidirectional bezel — as on a GMT watch, where it is used to read a third time zone — could be knocked the other way and understate remaining air, which is why the diver's standard forbids it.
How often should a watch's water resistance be tested?
Annually if you swim with it, after any battery change or caseback removal, and before any trip where it will be in the sea. Gaskets are rubber and harden with age, so a ten-year-old unserviced watch has water resistance bearing little relation to the figure on its caseback. Also have a newly bought pre-owned watch tested before trusting the rating — you have no idea how old those seals are.
